Is the Democratic Party Really as Far-Left as It Seems?

If one listens to Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, hearing would seem to be believing… “medicare for all”, slave reparation, “free this and that,” etc., are their positions.

In fact, Iowa results showed that these two, plus left wing-pandering ex-mayor Pete Buttigieg, garnered backing from more than half of the state’s Democrats.

Yet moderate forces among Democrats are still sizeable with results for  Joe Biden and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar of about 30%.

[Applying the label “moderate” to these two contenders can be misleading in assessing their political identities.  Given the undeniable leftward shift of the Democratic Party which has occurred  over the past two decades, their current policy prescriptions would have been labeled “left wing” in the year 2000.]

For Democrats wise enough to understand that November victory prospects will be greatly diminished by fielding the likes of Sanders or Warren, the hope is that Iowa is not a harbinger of the future.  But maybe the current perception of the Democratic Party is indeed the reality.  That prospect, understandably, makes Republicans gleeful.
