The death in Baltimore earlier this month of a petty
criminal while in police custody sparked riots and led to the indictment of six
city police officers.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, eighteen Charm City
residents were shot. Seven died.
About forty people were fatally shot during the entire
month of May, breaking a fifteen year record.
No protests or rioting have been reported.
I do not know the strength of the evidence supporting the
charges against the police officers, but I’m sure that many shooting victims
would gladly have tolerated “excessive” law enforcement practices if such would
have thwarted their assailants.
